Dear Clients, Friends and Family, on the morning of September 11th, we received a telephone call at the gym describing the events occurring in New York, Washington D.C. and Pennsylvania, as they came across the television for the time. Of course, we were shocked perhaps still don't want to believe what has happened. The effects of the recent terrorist attacks against our country and its precious people are far reaching. We each have a story about where we were that morning, what we were doing, who we were with, and who we know that lost a loved one or their own life. All of us at The Fitness Coach want to extend our deepest heartfelt sympathy to the victims, their families, and to all Americans.
The Fitness Coach was created and exists to provide an outlet to our clients, friends and family to combat the stress of everyday life. Obviously, the stress we knew a year ago is different that the stress that exists today. During these trying times, the need for an outlet is greater than ever. Recently, news reporter Hollie Johnson with the Local Edition of Channel 8 Headline News interviewed The Fitness Coach about the effects of exercise on depression and stress. We want to briefly share the information content with you.
Exercise provides freedom from stress and helps you feel better. Physical activity results in chemicals being released into specific areas of the brain and spinal cord. We commonly call these chemicals endorphins and enkephalins. Endorphins and enkephalins are opiate-like chemicals secreted by the brain which suppress pain and elevate mood. In other words, they provide a natural high. These chemicals are released into the body within the first five minutes of your workout and continue to be released during vigorous physical activity. Just one more reason we call exercise the great equalizer.
As a result of the events of September 11th and those ongoing, I'm convinced that we have been permanent changed as individuals and as a patriotic people. While so many things exist beyond our control, what we can control is ourselves. My hope is that the change we're experiencing is forward and positive. As always, our facility and our fitness coaches are here for you.
Sincerely,
Gretchen Ashton, CFT, BST, AFI The Fitness Coach

Dear Clients and Friends,
I have just been reflecting on the soon-to-be-classic Wal-mart commercial where the male clerk says, "Wal-mart wouldnt be nothin without the customers." Grammar notwithstanding, the sentiment is right-on. Neither would The Fitness Coach.
I cant imagine that other personal trainers are as blessed as I am to have clients as wonderful as you. Many of you were referrals from other clients and I know you appreciate the value of a recommendation from someone you trust.
Im including a special invitation for you to give to a friend, entitling them to a complimentary workout. Please be selective about the recipient, choose someone you would like to see at the gym, someone you wouldnt mind seeing a little more often. As a thank you for your referral, Im pleased to extend a free workout session to you when your invitation is redeemed.
Thank you for your faithfulness as The Fitness Coach goes through many stages in growth; thank you for the honesty youve shown when things werent "quite right"; but most of all, thank you for your friendship.
Sincerely, Gretchen Ashton Archive: 2003
